Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, is a minimally invasive technique that uses radiofrequency energy to precisely target and treat affected veins. This treatment addresses the underlying issues that cause vein conditions, leading to improved vascular health, symptom relief, and enhanced quality of life for many patients.

Conditions Treated

RFA is a versatile and highly effective procedure for addressing various vascular issues, including:

Procedure Overview

  • Preparation

Before your procedure, Dr. Tawfik will review the RFA process, including discussing the targeted vein, the expected outcomes, and any potential risks. You may be asked to discontinue specific medications, such as blood thinners, prior to the procedure.

  • Anesthesia

RFA is typically performed under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. In some cases, the use of a local anesthetic may be sufficient to numb the treatment area.

  • Ultrasound guidance

Dr. Tawfik uses ultrasound imaging to locate and visualize the affected vein. This helps guide the catheter to the precise treatment site.

  • Catheter insertion

A small incision is made near the treatment area, typically on the patient’s leg. Through this incision, a thin catheter with an electrode at the tip is inserted into the affected vein.

  • Radiofrequency energy application

The catheter is carefully positioned within the vein. When in the correct position, radiofrequency energy is applied through the electrode. This energy generates heat, causing the vein to shrink and collapse.

  • Catheter removal

Once the procedure is completed, the catheter is slowly withdrawn from the vein.

  • Compression and bandaging

To aid in the closure of the treated vein and reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising, the patient’s leg may be bandaged and compressed using special stockings or wraps.

FAQs

Most patients can resume regular activities on the day of the procedure with minimal limitations.

While RFA is effective in closing off diseased veins, it doesn’t prevent new veins from becoming affected by similar conditions. It is a long-lasting solution for certain vein conditions, but additional treatments may be needed in the future.

RFA is a generally safe procedure, but potential side effects include mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the treated area. Although rare, Dr. Tawfik will discuss any other serious complications with you before the procedure.
